How Can I Choose A Subject and Publish Articles When I do Not Have the Expertise Yet? I

How can I choose a subject and publish a number of articles when I do not have the skills and expertise that I am supposedly explaining? In other words, how can I legitimately write articles as an authority on a given subject when I am not successful myself? For example, I’d like to write about marketing, or advertising, or establishing internet presence. But I’ve not done well at it, much less kept up with the latest technology.

Answer: The first thing I would have to ask you–and if we were communicating then I′m going to guess that your answer would be “Yeah.” If I asked you to write an article on let’s just say for example, Dog Training. If I were to ask you to write an article on dog training and let’s assume you don’t know anything about dog training, would you be able to write that article? And would you be able to write that article even though you don’t know anything about it? And I think that the answer would probably be, “Yes″. You’d go online, you’d look up dog training, you’d come up with ten articles that tell you all about dog training. You’d read all ten of those articles, perhaps you’d take some notes. And then you’d be able to write an article on dog-training.

So I say that just to say, just because you don’t know about something doesn’t mean that you can’t write about it. However, I want to look at the flip side.

Do you want to learn more about how I do it? I have just completed my brand new guide to article marketing success, ‘Your Article Writing and Promotion Guide‘

Quick Tips To Get Your Writing Started

When it comes to writing often the hardest thing to do is to get the first sentence down, too many times we find ourselves with an idea we want to work on but end up sitting here staring at the blinking cursor because we can’t seem to bring forth the right start. If that sounds like you there are a few things you can try:

Let your mind wander and just type the first thing that comes to you, while it may not necessarily be relevant to what you planned on writing about it can either set you off on a whole new journey or it can sometimes be just enough to trigger the words you wanted in the first place – remember the delete key can be your friend :-) the first sentence doesn’t have to stay there.

You can try starting in the middle (while that has never worked for me – it does for others). Depending on what it is you’re writing try starting a dialogue between your characters – who knows they may give you the story starter you want.

Turn the radio or television on and use the first song title or words you hear as a basis for your first words – song titles and magazine headlines etc can be great prompts for your writing.

I’ve never been able to write to an outline – I’m one of those that needs to just get that first sentence down and see where I end up – often times it’s a completely different place than where I started – but perhaps you could try developing certain aspects of what you want your writing, story etc to be: If it’s a story pick a character and give them an unusual personality or habit, if it’s an article try writing it from the opposing viewpoint etc.

If all else fails there is always the internet; a quick search and you’ll come up with plenty of online story starters and writing prompts etc to get your creative juices flowing.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt when it comes to writing, it’s that I shouldn’t force it. No matter how great I think my idea might be if I try too hard it just won’t work, it’s better to put that idea on the backburner until the muse gives you the first sentence you need. If you’re lucky once you start working on something else one word or phrase will stand out as the best way to get started on your initial project.

8 Tips for Writing Flash Fiction

Ever since I was a young girl, I have loved to write. Nothing was as freeing as sitting down and weaving a tale. The feeling of complete control was exhilarating. It still is. It did not matter if I was writing a long story, or a short one, the feeling was the same. One of my favorite fiction types was, and is, flash fiction.

But what is flash fiction? Depends on who you ask. Some feel a story is flash fiction if it is under 1000 words. Others feel it must be under 500 words to be in that category. Regardless of which one you believe, flash fiction is fun to write.

Flash fiction is similar to writing poetry. Every word must count when you write a poem and the same goes for short fiction. It takes discipline and a ruthless ability to only use the words necessary to tell the tale. You must accomplish a lot of things right away: introduce the main character, set the stage and prepare the reader for the story. And do this in a minimum number of words.

So, how do you accomplish this feat of writing magic? I am glad you asked.

1. Before you write, know what your story is going to be about. You should have a clear theme in your mind while you are writing. This is not the plot of your story, it is the message you want to pass on to your reader, what they will take with them when they finish your story.

2. Effective flash fiction stories deal with one event or time period in a character’s life. This is not the kind of fiction vehicle to write your character’s life story. It is one to use to write about one pivotal moment and its outcome.

3. Keep the number of characters down to the bare minimum. Every new character adds a new dimension to your tale and will require words to introduce, describe and resolve any conflicts. Keep only the characters who aid your main character along his journey.

4. Focus your story plot along one subject. Write the theme of your tale down and keep it near you while you write. Refer to it during the entire writing, and editing, time. Do not let your mind stray from that theme.

5. Pick each word carefully. You do not need a long, involved description of the character’s bedroom in a flash fiction. More is not better here. Give your reader a quick snapshot of the settings and events, enough to fill in the gaps without wasting your precious words.

6. Do not forget to use emotions to move your plot forward. Emotion is a powerful writing tool, one that writers sometimes forget about. Happiness, sadness, loss and elation are all emotions readers can identify with, so use them!

7. When you edit, do so with a sharp eye. Now is not the time to become sentimental about your “words”, now is the time to cut the ones that are not expressing your story theme. Slash overly descriptive scene, remove aimless dialogue, and only keep the words you need to tell your tale.

8. Flash fiction can be used for other things as well. It is a great way to get a better handle on a character from another story or novel you are writing. Take a character you need more insight on, give them a task and let them solve the problem quickly. You can use this type of story to learn more about your character, even if you never use it in a longer story.

Flash fiction stories are fun to write. They test your ability to tell a story concisely. With practice, flash fiction can become a wonderful writer’s tool for you.

Public Speaking: Does Preparation Help Or Hinder?

I want to relate a story of a presentation I gave recently to an audience of over 200 people.

The night before the presentation I had the thought that I should at least have the bare bones of my talk down so that I wouldn’t feel like I would stumble once I got into it.

The more I pondered this however I began to feel a strange sense of discomfort inside. As I reflected on the feelings I realized that the outline I had drafted for myself felt too rigid and constraining.

Now let me make something perfectly clear. It’s not as if I had a complicated outline to follow. All I had written down were 6 main points and how I thought I would present them.

So why was I feeling this way? Well it was largely because I couldn’t possibly know what the flow of the presentation would be until I was right in the middle of it. I knew that if I was too married to something that I “needed” to follow i.e. my outline I would run the risk of appearing too rigid and disconnected from the audience whose attention and participation I wanted to enlist.

So many presentations I have been to over the last 25 years have left me feeling bored, tired and sleepy. This was largely because the presenters were working from such a rigid outline and needed it more to assuage their own anxieties than to energize the audience to the message.

So rather than work on my outline I decided to have a nice relaxed evening and to get up early then next morning and go for a brisk walk. As I did so I allowed myself to reflect on how I wanted to feel as I was presenting my material to the audience.

I saw myself appearing energized, passionate, joyful relaxed and focused. As I did this I began to get myself into what some call “The Zone”. Throughout all of this I wasn’t focusing much on “what” I was going to say.

When I later arrived at the room where I was to present I just relaxed and got a feel of the energy in the room. As I did so I was flooded with the same positive feelings as well as preliminary thoughts of how I would begin my talk.

As I started I allowed myself to relax and feel the flow of the audience’s interest as well as the opening up of my heart as it guided me through the right channels.

It was only by allowing myself to relax into this experience that was emerging from within and added to by the people around me that I was able to know how to proceed.

You see, there was absolutely no way I could have predicted or prepared for that moment until I was in it.

The trick was “being in the moment″ so that I could intuitively, and I must emphasize, effortlessly convey what was to be conveyed.

After the talk I realized that it had come off extremely well as I was held over for more than an hour for questions afterwards.

So what I’m trying to say is that a speech is more than simply about preparation it’s about being in the moment with you heart, your intuition, and the audience.

Unfortunately the anxiety that most public speakers experience makes it impossible for all this to occur.

What’s more, some public speaking coaches advocate that preparation will diminish the anxiety. In my view it only gives the speaker a false sense of security. They may feel secure as they “hang on to” their outline while they are losing the audience along the way.

In the last 10 years I have perfected a new tool called the Mind Resonance Process(TM) (MRP) that allows individuals to tune into and surrender themselves to this immense intuitive inner wisdom.

MRP has allowed hundreds of individuals express their views in successful presentations in ways they could only have dreamed of before.

188 Stage Hero’s Journey (Monomyth): Mentor’s True Nature

The Hero′s Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188 stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY

THE HERO’S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).

d) Gives you a universal structural template upon which you can superimpose your situational story. This is why stories such as Alien (1979), Gladiator (2000), Midnight Cowboy (1969), American Beauty (1999), The Graduate (1967) and many others (all deconstructed at the URL below) appear to be different but are all constructed, almost sequence by sequence, in the same way.

and more…

ABRIDGED TIP(S):

*****Afterlife Act*****

Sequences include:

His receives a high status burial (is buried on high ground etc). In Out of Africa (1985), Denys is buried upon a hilltop.

His legend lives on through a select few. In Out of Africa (1985), Denys′ legend lives on through Karen.

A prophecy builds up around him.

After a while he is recalled (if had only disappeared or if he is able to wake from the dead - not unusual).

****Mentor’s True Nature*****

It is during the First Threshold Outer Cave Trial that the Mentor’s True Nature often becomes apparent. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Clyde gets attacked by the shopkeeper, knocks him out and says “..I ain’t against him…”

Why I’m Not Buying Your eBook

It doesn’t matter whether you are emailing a prospect, composing an ad, or writing a sales letter to promote your newly published eBook – correct grammar and spelling are important. Good or bad, it leaves a lasting impression on the reader and says a whole lot about your credibility.

Like the company who claims they can put my program at the top of every Search Engine for $97, yet when I check their site I notice that it is ranked #3. I sigh and roll my eyes: if they can put my website at the top why isn’t theirs ranked up there?

Credibility: it’s something we earn. It’s not a given.

If your sales letter is supposed to convince me to buy your eBook you ought to have the basic skills of a writer. Offer it to a friend to read for errors in grammar or spelling. If none are available, pay for a professional editor. Anything is better than presenting your offer on a sales page that looks like a fifth grader wrote it. It won’t attract a buyer and it sure won’t attract a possible sales-affiliate, like me, to promote it.

Programs that offer ‘spell check’ like Notepad or Word Perfect leave no excuse for the novice writer today. Set up your sales letter and eBook for that matter, in one of these programs so that grammatical errors and misspelled words will be underlined for your correction.

This is not 100% flawless however, as these services will not pick up homonyms – words that sound alike but are spelled differently. Hair and hare sound the same but if you use the wrong one in your sentence, spell-check will not pick it up because it is a real word, even if it’s the wrong one.

One can only imagine trying to read your eBook when the sales letter promises, “… we will offer you a peak at secrets never before revealed”. And further advises me that I should “not waist any time in ordering as the price will be going up after midnight.”

Homonyms give us the most grief as writers but if you find yourself falling into this grammatical pit, make yourself a list and hang it over your desk. Before long you will have sidestepped any chance of misusing these words. Actually you will smile when you come across others who are still clueless.

Next I’d like to address your misuse of words like “loose and lose”. Loose means not tight! Lose means to lack the possession of, to come to be without. So please don’t tell me I will “… loose inches in a matter of weeks”.

Also a word on the dreaded apostrophe – avoiding it entirely is not a solution. Like when you say, “… your going to love the results.” Actually you do not mean your but “you are going to love the results”. Why not use the apostrophe and join the two words: “you’re going to love the results”. Use it’s for it is, and that’s for that is. Try they’re for they are, and can’t for cannot.

Now imagine thousands of people buying and reading your eBook. They love it and write to you about how it has helped them with their weight problems. They even email all their friends and recommend your eBook. Sound far fetched? Not at all – it can and will happen to you.

As a fellow writer I hope this has not discouraged you and that you will keep publishing eBooks. In all fairness, let me add that you are far from an isolated case. More writings than I care to mention need the same advice. If you are reading this article your next effort will be better and attract more buyers one of them will be me.

Article Marketing – How I Have Used Article Marketing to Super Charge My List Building Efforts

Article marketing has so many wonderful uses. When you write articles and submit them to various online article directories, powerful backlinks are created which signal to the search engines that your web site has some power, has some reason to be ranked highly.

So article marketing can be used to generate natural search engine traffic in the long run, and of course we know that natural search engine traffic is some of the strongest traffic around.

Article marketing can also be used to create the illusion that you are an expert in your field. Many people are so terrified of writing that when they see that you have written over 100 articles, they feel as though you must be some sort of awesome online expert. And that may or may not be true, but remember, people buy the sizzle, not the steak – so the more sizzle you create, the more you will sell (just remember to keep the steak high-quality).

So where does article marketing fit in with list building, and is it effective? I’ll answer the second question first. For me it is very effective. But take that for what it is. I write a lot of articles. This is about my 336th article online. My average article produces 3 ½ subscribers. Do the math. Or look at it this way. If I write 10 articles a day, I get consistently 35 new subscribers per day. And article generated subscribers tend to spend a lot of money. So it is worth it to me to write these articles.

So how do you do it? You must write articles that pertain to the needs of the buyers on your email list. You see, you are not looking for newbies that are afraid to buy tools, or freebie-seekers who simply clog up your email boxes – you want to collect subscribers who purchase from you. How? Write articles that pertain to the people who generally buy from you online. Don’t write about how to do things online for free. Write about things that people might be willing to spend some money to learn more about.

Start Driving Traffic to Web Site for Free

Website traffic is critical to the survival of your website. Driving traffic to web site is your most important job. No sales can be made without traffic. It does not matter how nice of a website you have. The best headline and ad copy will not produce any sales without traffic. This article is going to reveal simple strategies that can be put into effect immediately. These are proven techniques to increase traffic to your site.

Write articles: This is an excellent technique that will do more than just bring traffic. It puts you in the position to show your expertise and build trust. This is very important. People have to trust you before they will place an order. Nobody will buy from you if they do not feel comfortable. Articles are a great way to “break the ice″. This technique will get free traffic to your web site.

Write a series of articles relating to your market niche and distribute them every week to major ezines such as ezine articles and Go articles. Make sure you include your bio or signature at the bottom of the article with a small amount of information about your website and a link to your homepage.

If people like the information, they will click the link to visit your site. This is why it’s important to provide useful, high quality information. People will only visit your website if you give them something of value.

Exchange links with popular sites: This method works on two levels. First of all, you will receive traffic through the your links posted on other sites. Also, as more and more websites link to yours, your search engine rankings naturally begin to rise. This can be a major source of traffic. Showing up on the first page of results in the major search engines can bring you tens of thousands of visitors per month. This will also get free traffic to your website.

Here is how to get links to your site. Look up sites that relate to the theme of your website and ask them to do a link exchange. In the email provide a link to the page that you are displaying their link on. Now the ball is in their court. They will either accept or deny your offer. If they refuse to do an exchange, take their link off of your site.

Traffic is critical to the survival of your website. So, start writing and submitting articles and exchanging links with popular sites. These are both excellent ways of driving traffic to web site for free.
