The Top Ten Tips for Effective Sales Letter Writing

The global marketplace is fast becoming a real marketplace: it is growing noisier and even more crowded, with vendors all racing to sell their wares to the nearest customer, and with marketing techniques that can be clever, if not downright ridiculous. Indeed, marketing campaigns are becoming more and more hard sell, annoying customers rather than attracting them.

Despite the good efforts of advertising companies, customers are now inundated with information and saturated with images. Many companies, moreover, are employing tactics that alienate rather than attract customers. This may be due to the fact that hard sell marketing methods tend to make companies appear impersonal, when customers first need to know that they are cared for.

In other words, customers need to know that you care, before they care what you know (or want to sell). A good sales letter might accomplish such a feat. A sales letter is simply a letter showing your company’s credibility, the effectiveness of your product or service, and persuasive words for the recipient to buy the product or service. Although this appears to be simple, writing an effective sales letter is easier said than done: it should be worded simply but convincingly, and it should be personal, but not intrusive.

If you want to write an effective sales letter, take note of these tips before you start writing or typing it out.

• A sales letter need not be filled with clever words, puns, or jokes. In fact, it should not employ any ridiculous tactics to attract customers. The best sales letters are in fact terse, simply worded, and free from jargon or acronyms that the prospective customer will not be able to understand.

• Address your customer directly, and by name. If you avoid addressing them as simply “Dear Sir or Madame” or “To Whom it May Concern,” then you will have taken the first step in convincing them of the goodness of your company, and the greatness of your products or services. A personal address makes customers feel that they are cared for.

• A good sales letter is always worded clearly, especially when you mention how the product or service will directly benefit the recipient. If you are selling computer parts, mention how the customer needs the parts, and how important a computer is in today’s society. If you are selling an encyclopedia set, mention how important reading still is, even with the Internet; mention how people always need to learn facts from a reputable source. As long as you make sure that your customers feel cared for, then you are on the right track.

• Build trust in your prospective customers. If you have testimonials from satisfied customers, or quotes from respected people in your business, then use them in your letter. Use them sparingly, however, as quotes and testimonials can make your marketing appear too aggressive.

• Maintain your company’s credibility. In as few words as possible, tell the recipient something about your company. If you are selling food products, you may want to state the safety standards to which you comply, or you may want to mention awards that your products received. Again, do not overdo this portion of the sales letter, since over-praising yourself will alienate, if not annoy your sales letter recipients.

• Make your sales letter attractive. Print the letter on high quality paper with good ink. A poorly printed or produced letter will turn customers away, no matter how good your product or service is. Remember, the quality of the letter represents your company’s capabilities, so invest in good printing.

• If you can, include useful tips or facts in boxes or sidebars along with the letter. If you cannot make these boxes or sidebars fit, then enclose a brochure that the prospective customer could use. For instance, if you are selling vacation packages to Europe, you can enclose a brochure on the top ten European destinations, along with a list of places to visit. Such a brochure can be attractive, and may find itself on the refrigerator door, where your name can be exhibited for all to see.

• Deliver firm instructions on what the letter recipient should do. Should they call you to buy your product? Should they email you to avail of your services? Provide your contact information, but be prepared to field calls and respond to emails.

• Include incentives with the products and services that you are offering. Studies show that customers respond to offers of gifts and discounts, so make your offers as attractive as possible.

• Have the boss sign the letter personally. This lends a personal touch to the letter, and will look better than a signature that has been printed out.

As long as you reach out to your customers and know their needs, you will make your voice heard in the crowded global marketplace. Write a good sales letter, and you can see your profits rise.

How Writers Can Master The Internet

This is not hype. You are a writer. You browse the Internet almost every day now, looking for both entertainment and information. You see other writers having blogs and web pages on the Internet.

And you wonder: where does that leave you?

Here is the most startling current piece of information there is now in 2007.

The Internet, the World Wide Web, has become the publisher of choice for the world’s information needs.

THE INTERNET IS THE BIGGEST PUBLISHING HOUSE AND THE PREFERRED PUBLISHING HOUSE IN THE WORLD BY FAR!!!

Do you doubt this?

You don’t feel the Internet has the prestige that having a book published with a big publishing house would bring you, and maybe you are right.

However, those places at the top of the traditional publishing world are few and far between. Interesting metaphor.

While at the same time organically the biggest publishing house by far has developed just next door!!!

Is it not time for you as a writer to claim your niche on the World Wide Web?

A writer is a packager and conveyer of information, even if you write successfully sold novels.

People in the millions look to their computers and the Internet for most of their information needs.

This is natural since the Internet publishes information quickly and in a relevant manner, and with more experts per subject area than any paper book publisher can muster.

WRITERS EARNING MONEY SELLING THEIR WORK

An economic analysis of what writers are paid in the traditional publishing world shows that all but the top writers are getting screwed royally. How is this?

Writers traditionally are paid eight percent about of the retail price of a book. The author does the big labor creating a book and the publisher and book sellers take over ninety percent of the cover price the consumer pays for that book.

We don′t complain that this is totally unfair. We say to the writer: move to the Internet, the biggest and best publisher in the world.

On the Internet selling your work you will get at least fifty percent of what your electronic books sells for after expenses are paid.

There are no printing and paper costs, or if there are they are taken up in the Print On Demand, POD, publishing service. You get even here twenty to forty percent of your book cover price.

So that almost suddenly now paper book publishers, their editors, their printers, your agent, your publicist, and any other people such as sales people, have become limited or irrelevant.

The world has gone largely Internet for its information needs, free and paid for.

It will only get worse for writers who rely on paper book publishers. You, the writer, will never make much money there unless you are one of the very few.

You will have to go Internet now. These are some of the key ideas you need to know and follow to survive and grow as a writer making a living from your work.

Create a web site or a web blog site where you make your presence as an author known.Don’t rely on your web site or blog to sell your books in paper for you.You don’t make a pretty, author-like, book-cover like, web site. These pretty sites do not sell books or products. They just look nice, but few of these pretty sites have that many paying visitors who will buy your books from them. I as an author with a pretty website, dreamwor􅮀.com” target=”_blank dreamwor􅮀, since 1999 know because very few of my paper book have sold from this website. You don’t just create a website. You create a marketing website from which you give away good information you are expert in through short articles, and also through which you sell expert information as downloadable books, fiction and non-fiction.You as a writer are not selling your style. You are selling your expert knowledge. Therefore, you must position yourself successfully on the web as not just an author but an expert in a certain subject also. THIS IS THE KEY!!!Check out what we say here. Go to author’s pretty web sites. Do you read them and buy from them? Do you? Go to Internet marketing websites and note the difference in how they are designed and written. March 15, 2007 - you feel a pull to read some of their free articles, and also to buy some of their reports and services. This is the marketing pull. As a writer these days you are responsible for also marketing your work and writing it in a style that alerts people to the fact they may need your information. This article comes from a working writer who has sold over 350,000 books published in paper. He has now moved his writing and publishing career to the Internet.

He has changed also how he writes some of his information, including fiction and non-fiction to formats that work well currently on the Internet.

He has bought marketing reports and services that help him get sales through the Internet of his work. He has produced new work Internet style in his effort to become relevant to this new way of publishing information with the biggest publisher in the world, the Internet.

188 stage Hero’s Journey and Transformation (Monomyth) - Gaining a Capacity

FORWARD

The 188 stage Hero’s Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188 stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY

THE 188 STAGE HERO′S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).

d) Tells you what to write. For example, at a certain stage of the story, the focus should be on the Call to Adventure and the micro elements within.

GAINING A CAPACITY THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY LACKING

Critically, the Seizure of the Sword also represents the gaining of a capacity that was previously lacking.

In Thelma and Louise (1991), it is at this stage of the Journey that Thelma suddenly gains the capacity to be able to nonchalantly put the cop in the trunk of his car and take his shades.

In The Godfather (1972), Michael is now fully versed in Italian, enough to teach Apollonia English.

Writers Should Use Online Article Submission Sites to Propel Publicity

All writers should write short and sweet articles of 250-500 words and put them online at a reputable online article submission website in order to propel publicity. There are many types of writers out there these days and many cross-over category authors as well. Online there are eBook writers, reporters, article writers, Internet content writers and SEO writers specializing in search engine key words to drive traffic to websites.

Many writers both on and offline find themselves as crossovers. As an amateur writer I too feel in a way that I have participated in all those categories at times. I have been paid for articles, co-authored Franchising 101 and driven massive traffic to our Think Tank Website as well. Now then I just cannot say enough good things about the use of a reputable online article submission site to propel these goals in writing.

Personally, I believe every professional writer should use these online article submission sites to propel their efforts and every amateur writer in the Whole Wide World who has something to say should write an article for the rest of us in the world to see. Great stuff indeed as I hit 1000 articles written this month and 1.8 million article views.

It is all good from where I sit. I can tell you this, although I am retired I get people emailing a few times a week demanding I go back to work and sell them a franchise (I previously founded a franchise business before retiring), but I am retired I tell them? I can tell you I wish I would have had a reputable online article submission site around from 1994 to 2002, I cannot imagine how much more I could have done. Consider this in 2006.

Creative Writing: Taking Your Profile Interview to the Next Level

Profiles are one of the most difficult types of articles to write—at least, that’s true for me. If you find profiles easy, then consider yourself lucky.

Difficult or not, with profiles as with any other writing, research can do a lot to pull you through.

Unless you’re a veteran writer, you may think that, in order to do a profile, you simply interview the person (if you’re profiling a person rather than a business), and maybe a few other people for added interest. That’s partly true, but here’s a tip: Research the basics beforehand so you can focus on the juicy stuff during the interview.

What do I mean by basics? I mean the not-so-juicy details that form the framework of the profile. These are details like where the person was born where they went to high school, college or grad school; what jobs they’ve held; if they’ve ever served in the military or if they’ve ever received any honors or awards. Consider them the skeleton of your story. They’re small and mundane, but necessary. With the skeleton out of the way, you can go in ready to tackle the real muscle without wasting time on the small stuff.

Here are a few ways to research a person before a profile:

1. Obtain their resume or vita. Think about it; a resume is a person’s professional life in a one-page nutshell. Much of the basic information you need—such as education and previous employment—you’ll find in this document. Some people will have their resumes posted on their websites. Others will send them to you if you call and ask.

2. Find previous articles written about the person. If other journalists have worked to dig into this person’s life, why not reap some of the rewards? You’ll often find answers to deeper questions, which can form the foundation for even more probing questions of your own. Again, check the person’s website; websites often contain articles favorable to the person. However, if you’re not after a strictly feel-good piece, you’ll also want to check other sources.

3. Read what they’ve written. If the person has written articles, books, theses, etc., you can often use them to find out a lot about the person’s personality and philosophy. If the person is a prolific writer, you probably won’t have time to read everything. However, even a snippet of their writing will be better than nothing.

Use the information you gain from these sources to form detailed, probing questions…or silly questions to lighten the mood of your article. Armed with a little knowledge, you can walk into any profile interview with confidence. You’ll appear prepared and professional—a sure hit with interviewees and editors!

Article Marketing: Breaking Free

As a prolific article writer I have been asked by some how I am able to generate so many quality articles in such a short period of time. Frankly, it isn’t always easy, but there are some things I would like to share with you in order that you may, perhaps, increase your production as I have. Increased production for you means additional and regular submissions resulting in greater exposure of your name on the world wide web. All of this should translate into more money for you, the chief reason for article marketing I might add.

In a seven month period this past year, I wrote over 400 articles that were submitted to various article directories on the internet. In addition, I wrote another 1100 articles for clients that were then delivered to them to publish on their own sites. These web content articles were all short, concise, and generally averaged below 250 words for each article. Most of my regular articles are typically 500 words in length with the rare article or two approaching 1500 words. Still, this achievement was no small feat for me, especially when the subject matter brought me into unfamiliar territory.

After much trial and error I have learned that the best way for me to keep my production high — while at the same time delivering useful and interesting content — meant that I had to streamline my operation. The following are some “tried and true” practices that I have put to the test and you can too.

Stick With What You Know — I don’t mind writing on subjects that I have little knowledge about, but in doing so I can get bogged down by excess research time. If I am writing for a client, I charge accordingly once they are aware that I am writing in an area that is outside of my particular areas of expertise and they are still desiring to utilize my services. As far as submitting articles to the online directories, I purely keep my subject matter limited to a handful of areas where I shine.

Start, Then Stop — There are times when I am in the midst of writing an article that I find myself unable to complete my undertaking due to a lack of information. If I cannot garner what I need right away, I put the unfinished article to the side until I obtain the information needed to complete the job. Let’s just say that I have a regular supply of “go-to” articles that I plan on finishing at a later time. I don’t get hung up on any one article, instead I move on and focus on the next. Overall, my production level stays high as I don’t let one article hamper my work flow.

Outlines, Everywhere — Well, not exactly. Still, there are times when I am in between projects, but still in the writing mood [which for me is almost always!] Therefore, what I do to stay busy is to craft a list of article subjects or titles and then work on writing an outline or two or three…you get the picture! Some of these outlines have come in handy when a client requests a specific topic. I simply pull out the outline, expand on each of the points I already have listed, and I flesh out my article. Quickly and almost effortlessly a draft version is ready and sent out for my client’s review. At times I use the same technique for submitting work to the various article directories.

Be Consistent — If you aren’t writing on a regular basis, getting started again can become much harder to do than if you were to write on a consistent basis. In the days before electronic fuel injection was standard equipment [guess which topic I write on chiefly?], a cold car could take long to warm up. Much like those particular automobiles of yesteryear you need a constant stream of fuel [articles] going to stay warm. The hotter you are, the more you will produce.

In all, article writing is an enjoyable task for some while it is laborious for others. As you write, do not overly concern yourself with style, grammar, punctuation, and verbiage as these are things you can massage once your draft is done. Break free of the article writing rut and get yourself into a working rhythm today. If you do, you will become a recognized and respected author in no time.

Writing an Ebook From Scratch

The most difficult part of writing an ebook is beginning. At first it seems like an impossible task. You have to break it down into convenient tasks.

There is only one way to tackle the job - step by step.

The first thing you have to do, is to get organized. You must organize your thoughts. There are some steps you should take before you begin. Once you′ve gone through the list below , you will be ready to begin writing your ebook.

First, work out a working title. Jot down a few different titles, and eventually, you’ll find that one that will can live with. Titles help you to focus your writing on your topic; they guide you in predicting what readers will want to know.

Secondly, write out a thesis statement which is a sentence or two stating exactly what problem you are addressing and how your book will solve that problem. All chapters should follow from here. Once you’ve got your statement fine-tuned, you’ve built your basis. From that foundation, your book will grow, one chapter at a time.

Your statement will keep you focused while you write your ebook. Remember: all chapters must support your thesis statement. If they don’t, they don’t belong in your book. For example, your thesis statement could read: We′ve all experienced writers block at times in our lives, but there are twenty proven techniques and methods to give you that push in the right direction.

Before you start to write, make sure there is a good reason to write your book.Ask yourself some questions:

* Will you be presenting useful information and is that information currently relevant?

* Will your book positively affect the lives of your readers?

* Will it keep the reader’s attention?

* Will your book answer questions that are meaningful and significant?

If you can answer yes to these questions, you can feel confident about the potential of your ebook.

Another vital step is to figure out who your target audience is. It is this group of people you will be writing for, and this group will dictate many essentials of your book, such as style, tone, diction, and even length.

Next, make a list of the reasons you are writing your ebook. Do you want to promote your business? Do you want to bring traffic to your website? Do you want to improve your reputation?

Do you want to sell it as a product on your website, or do you want to offer it as a free gift for filling out a survey or for ordering a product? Do you want to use the chapters to create an e-course, or use your ebook to attract affiliates? The more you know upfront, the easier the writing will be.

How to make your ebook “user friendly”

You need to work out how to keep your writing engaging. Often anecdotes, testimonials, little stories, photos, graphs, advice, and tips will keep the reader turning the pages. Sidebars are useful for quick, accessible information, and they break up the bulk of the page.

Write with a casual, conversational tone rather than a formal tone such as textbook diction. Reader’s respond to the feeling that you are having a conversation with them. Break up the length and structure of your sentences so you don’t bore your readers into sleep. Sentences that are all the same length and structure tend to be a good sleep inducer!

Good writing takes practice. The art of writing is a lifetime process; the more you write (and read), the better your writing will become.

Finally, decide on an easy-to-read font that’s easy to read, and stick to that font family. Using multiple fonts will only tire your readers out before they′ve gotten past your introduction.

Make sure you run a spell and grammar check. You are judged by something as minor as correct punctuation, so don’t mess up a great book by tossing out random errors.

Last of all, create an index. That’s it! You’ve written a book! Now all you have todo is publish online, and wait for downloads from your website visitors.

Drama Tips For Your Public Persona #1 - Spellbound With Godspell

I recently saw a youth production of Godspell. This was the third time in like 30 years. The first time it was basically over my head. I had no real God conscious going on. The production was fun and the costuming a bit bazaar, bordering on irreverent I heard someone say. The second time the music was old and the message seemed trite. But the version from the youth at First Baptist Church in Ft. Lauderdale was spellbinding, captivating and intoxicating. I’ve never laugh so hard in a church setting, period. They were innovative at every turn. I walked away wondering why was this presentation so much stronger and impactful than any I have seen?

As a dramatist I have experience some magic moments on stage. Those times when I didn’t need the audience’s approval, I was in the zone and believing every thing I said and did was as if it was actually happening at that very moment. Those are often fleeting flashes, but I look to achieve them at each presentation. Tucked in that last sentence is one of the biggest acting/performing jewels of advice I could impart to any aspiring or veteran actor. Believing. It is harder for us adults to fantasize so completely as to believe the “lie” you are telling. And most acting is a form of lying. Trying to convince your audience to suspend their disbelief. Hoping the audience will buy what you’re selling. To believe what you feel is really what you feel.

The lesson demonstrated by the youth in this production of Godspell is simple. Simple does not mean easy. And it gets a little harder each year as we become more reserved, or just plain lazy. Motivational speakers like Jack Lannom or Zig Ziglar have perfected it. Actor Meryl Streep is a prime example. They believe what they are saying ordoing at the moment they are doing it. Just like the child who ever puts on a make believe cape or mask or cap gun or nurses uniform or whatever. Don′t bother to tell that child it isn′t real, you are wasting your time and damaging their daydream. Why can a child so convince themselves and act so, well, childish? Because they are not trapped in our cynicism, or ego trip of self-centeredness.

Many actors confess they are shy unless performing. (Unfortunately too many are not.) They just step into their other world and believe. So what? So try it. Just let your self imagine. Then for a moment, however small, you will feel that it is real. Now, I know folks that live in a fantasy world without restraint. That ain’t what I’m talking ‘bout here. It is possible to control your fantasy trips while abandoned to your moment. Then it is no act at all.

Article Writing and Marketing: So How Do I Tell Where My Articles are Going?

Do you know how to tell who is picking up and using your articles?

So you have some articles posted at EzineArticles.com and other big article directories. Good for you, keep them coming.

So now how do you know who is using your articles? Here are three tips for how to find out who is using your articles and how to build that relationship.

1. Copy and paste the title of your article into Google, Yahoo or other search engines. Be certain to put your title in quotation marks. For example

This is My Great Title.

will not work for our purposes here.

What will work is

“This is My Great Title.”

So put your title, in quotation marks, into Google or Yahoo and hit search.

You will now see the list of places that are using your article.

2. If they are using your article correctly, which means there are active links in the resource box back to your site, send this email:

“I noticed that you are using my article “This is My Great Title” in your newsletter/website. I just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you and that there are lots more where that one came from. Please let me know how I can send you more articles.”

3. If they are not using your article correctly with active links back to you, then send this email:

“I noticed that you are using my article “This is My Great Title” in your newsletter/website. Thank you for doing that. I also noticed that the links back to my site were not active or were missing. Please correct that for me so that there are active links back to my site. Thank you in advance for taking care of that for me. There are lots more articles where that one came from, so just let me know how I can get you some more in the future.”
