Hero’s Journey (Monomyth): The Importance of Symbolism in Stories

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188 stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

There is only one story.

The Hero’s Journey:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharsis).

d) Gives you a universal structural template upon which you can superimpose your situational story.

and more…

The critical importance of SYMBOLISM in successful stories

Most of the time we don’t notice it, but screenplays consist of much more structure and symbolism than is commonly assumed. And that is right, because they should be designed for maximum impact.

Take the role of water. At the stage of the Near Death Experience, romantic lovers part in the rain (50 First Dates, 2004), protagonists are captured and tortured with water (Green Mile, 1999), protagonists happen to be on vessels that sink (War of the Worlds, 2005) and heroes are submerged by antagonisms (Jaws, 1977).

The role of water is ancient and works on the audience subconsciously; it signifies baptism / dirt to cleanliness / washing away the Old and emerging to the New Self.

Article Marketing – Make It Easy On The Reader

Article writing is hard work, so you need to ensure that the reader actually gets to read your article. Why – because an easily read article gets spread around the internet like wild fire and is your perfect viral marketing process.

Make it easy to read: Most computer based readers scan a web page or email searching for the information that they need, so you need to help them:

* Have an eye catching, descriptive title.

* Have lots of sub titles – just like in the article.

* Use bullet points to make it quick and easy to assimilate the information.

* Get to the point quickly.

* Use easy to understand, jargon free, wording.

* Introduce your article with a short and interesting opening paragraph.

* End your article with a good conclusion.

* Leave them wanting more information and use your resource box to show them where to get it.

Make it easy to use: Getting your article read is one thing, but you also want it to be published by as many people as possible. Here’s some salient points:

* Make it the right length – under 350 words for ezines, under 750 words for web pages and under 1250 words to be included in ebooks.

* Make it grammatically correct and ensure you spell check. Best to use American spelling – even though the Brits invented the language!

* Make it interesting, humorous or contentious – or all three if you can.

* Don’t ramble – get to the point, expand on the information and close the discussion.

* Write as if you are writing for one eager to learn person – keep it personable.

* Don’t include words that are likely to trigger spam busters.

* Make it relevant, useful and your own work!

So good luck in your article marketing.

How You Can Find That Favorite Audio Book And Where

Technology is a wonderful thing indeed. It makes life easier in almost every ramification.

One such area in which technology has made life a lot easier is in the area of searching for information.

Gone are those days of spending long hours, days or even weeks looking for the information you want.

For example, 20 years ago if you were searching for a particular book you would have to physically visit the Library.

As if that isn’t manual work enough, you would then have to spend laborious hours searching through the huge collection of books therein, all in an attempt to find the book you want.

And who says you would end up getting what you want?

Most times you hardly ever get the book you want, even with the help of the librarians.

But gone are those days.

Now with the Internet you can find ANY information you want with just a few mouse clicks.

If for example, you are looking for a particular audio book, you can get started from the search engines. Simply visit any of the major search engines like Google and type the book title you are looking for with the word “audio book” included.

By simply doing this you will be presented with the most relevant results for your search.

Specifically, you can get the particular audio book you are looking for by going directly to bookstore websites. One of the best bookstores on the Internet is:

best-audiobook-store.com

This online bookstores has special search features on its site which you can use to find the particular audio book title you are searching for.

Using these search features on the site is similar to using the search feature on your favorite search engine.

The major advantage is that you are searching the database of this particular bookstore (very focused search), unlike the search engines which search the entire database of websites that they have (obviously unfocused search).

To get started, visit any of these online bookstores best-audiobook-store.com and enter the particular audio book title you are searching for. If you know the exact title or author name, put it in the search.
If you exhaust these options and are unable to find that audio book that you are looking for, visit one of the many book forums on the Internet and ask for the advice of other book enthusiasts. You will be astonished that there are many people out there who know a lot and are willing to share.

Janet Rusky is an amateur article writer and runs one of the best audio book stores on the internet.

188+ Stage Hero’s Journey (Monomyth) - Bonnie and Clyde (1967)

FORWARD

The 188 stage Hero’s Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188 stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY

THE 188 STAGE HERO’S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).

d) Tells you what to write. For example, at a certain stage of the story, the focus should be on the Call to Adventure and the micro elements within.

ABRIDGED TIPS, EXCERPTS AND EXAMPLES:

(simply go to screenplay-structure.com/ or story-structure.org/ for full details)

*****Washing away the Old Self*****

Symbolism is underrated. Post the First Threshold, a washing away of the old self is nortmal. In Brokeback Mountain (2005), Jack washes his clothes.

*****First Trial Inner Cave - No Going Back*****

A number of things happen in the Inner Cave of the First Trial. One element is the No Going Back. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Blanche wants out but Buck (and therefore she) can’t get out because he has killed a man.

*****Resisting the Physical Separation*****

There is always resistance to the Physical Separation. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Where’s the car? The car jams between the other two.

*****Losing a part of the Old Self. Gaining a part of the New Self*****

Before entering the First Threshold, the Hero loses a part of his Old Self and gains a part of his New Self. Often some tangible symbol or behaviour will be lost and gained. In An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Zach leaves his bike behind and tries to cover up his tattoo. In Raging Bull (1980), Jake’s wife leaves him.

How to Win the Hearts of Your Readers with Your Writing

I’ve heard some people say that some people are just born as a writer and they have this natural flair and charm whenever they put their pens (erm…should I be using the term ‘keyboard’ to work here?) to work. I’ve read many articles where some writers are able to just churn out words that capture, entice and propel the reader into action! Yes, it’s serious business writing and I am probably scaring some of you off as it is – but bear with me, I am getting to my point.

The point is I don’t agree that writers are born. Sure, some writers have this love for writing and possess an admirable flair for it while others struggle to put their thoughts into words. The flair that I am talking about is to win the hearts of the readers with words. After spending a decade of freelance writing, I’ve read a load of articles here and there and give them points in my head. And some articles that I have seen manages to keep me reading to the end…some made me click away from second sentence onwards.

The only way to capture the heart of your readers with your words is to write with your heart. Think it, feel it and write it! I am sure a lot of writers out there will agree with me on this and I am pretty sure I am right.

You see, the way to win the hearts of your readers is to see things from their point of view and think like your reader - that’s the best thing a writer can do to capture the hearts of their writers. I am sure it’s no secret but you’ll be surprised with how many writers make the mistake of writing it for themselves! The moment you start writing the article for yourself, the readers may find it easier to lose interest and stop reading.

So, if you’re an aspiring freelance writer, start excising this method by thinking like your reader before you start writing and soon you’ll see your reader base growing. Good luck!

Self-Publishing a Novel? What you Absolutely Need to Put on the Last Page

You have been working hard on your self-published novel and soon your dream will come true -It will be printed. Or maybe you have already published a novel and are working on your next one. Don’t skip this very important step.

I have read and seen a lot of self-published novels and have published two myself. The whole process can be very rewarding. But one thing I have noticed about self-published authors is that they tend to skip over the marketing aspects of their book. It is true that you are a writer, but if you are a self-published writer you have to be more than just a writer. You also have to be a marketer. No doubt you already know this. But did you know that your book itself is a valuable marketing tool you can use to sell your other books or writing?

Okay, so what should you put on the last page of your novel?

You need to put on your marketer’s hat and do a little marketing of yourself to your reader. Do you have another book coming out? Have you previously published a book? Do you have a website or a blog? Put information about all these things at the back of your book. Your reader has purchased your book and will probably be very interested in finding more of your material. Make it easy for him or her to find more! And make it easy for your reader to recommend you to his or her friends. A website url is free and very easy for your reader to pass along to a colleague or friend.

I recommend you spend a significant amount of time on this. And ideally you should have at least five or six pages of information about your projects, yourself, and anything related to learning more about you. I would even go as far as putting your email address there too. (Of course, you need to be confident that you will be keeping the same email account for the next several years.)

Why should you do this?

There are two very important rules of marketing, and putting sales materials in the back of your book is a good way to take advantage of the second rule. The first rule is that a first time sale is very difficult to get. And the second rule is that a repeat customer is very easy to get. Making the sale of your book to someone was a difficult thing. You had to somehow find the people that were interested in your particular book and this is a challenge. Then you had to convince them to purchase it. And this was even harder. But after all that work you have come up with a group of people who have bought your book. Don’t let these people disappear! They are highly interested customers and are very likely to purchase more of your writing. But you don’t need to go through the process of finding them all over again. You already have them and they already have your marketing materials in their hands –your book.

Help your reader become an advocate for you!

People can be very passionate about the books they read; and discovering a new author is something few readers can resist telling their friends about. Make it easy for your reader to spread the word about you. The conversation would go something like this: “I just finished this great novel. You have got to check this author out. His website is in the back of the book. Let me get the url for you.”

Writing a book is a challenge. But as a self-published author you will not be able to publish the book and then wait for the world to discover it. You have to take an aggressive approach to marketing it. And once the book is sold don’t let that be the end of the marketing. If you have lots of materials and resources about you and your writing in the back of your book. It will act as a tool to continue your marketing efforts for years to come without any added effort on your part.

Will Kalif is the author of two self-published fantasy novels. You can read his complete first novel or the first chapters of his second novel for free on his website at:

What Are Invitational Speeches And How to Deliver Them

Invitational speeches are a special form of persuasive public speaking. You enter into a dialogue with your listeners on a speech topic. Here’s how.

You share your ideas, beliefs and values. It is not necessary to convince the audience to agree with your point of view. The main goal of an invitational is to discuss and explore the main points of your invitational speech topics in a vivid dialogue.

Respect is the keyword, respect for each argument or view of each other.

How to deliver an invitational speech topic? I can recommend these two ways:

Take A Side
You can choose to take a side and explain why by discussing your arguments in favor of the invitational speech topic of your choice. Than you ask the audience questions. Ask for their opinions. Let them explain theirs. Reply contra arguments honestly and polite. Discuss. Ask them to understand your ideas. Do not persuade them to agree with you.

Explore A Hot Topic

Another form of invitational public speaking is informing the listeners on the different aspects of a speech topic. Give all facts, figures, background information and pros and contras. Help them to understand all ins and outs. Ask them questions, let them ask you questions. Be the guide in a - what I call - joint-thinking-and-sharing process.

Many people who are looking for invitational speech topics are well aware of the circumstances at for example an invitational tournament. They don’t expect to reach any agreement, but they are able to achieve appreciation for their speech topic.

In simple words: not persuading, but understanding and exploring the different aspects and viewpoints.
That’s the ultimate purpose of invitational public speaking.

Three Reasons to Write Articles and the Fourth Most Important One!

We think that articles are so important to your internet marketing strategy, that we also tell you the secret of getting your articles read, passed around and high up in the search engines.

1. Branding: Getting your name known amongst your peers and on the internet. The better your article is the easier it will be for larger web sites to pick up and publish your article on their site or in their ezines. The more your web site or name is seen, the more you are remembered and of course, publication on a market leader is very helpful. Produce a quality, well designed, error free article and this reflects well upon your business.

2. Lead Generation: That oh so important resource or signature box. Hopefully your article will be so interesting that people will want to see your web site or join your ezine and look to the resource box to click on your web site link.

3. Promotion: Most people now know that links make a large contribution to your search engine rankings. Provided you add your web site URL to your signature box, as your article proliferates in major article databases as well as hopefully being published, then your links will grow. If you want people to be able to find your article or web site on the search engines, then make sure that there are some major key words in your article and particularly in the heading.

4. Information: The prime reason why people search for and visit web sites is to find out stuff. Your article should be answering this need. Research your market well and look at forums to see the kind of questions people are asking, what they are searching for and most importantly how you can answer them in your article.

Strategy: Of course your article is not going to be read and passed around if it is never opened in the first place. Make sure that you have a catchy and memorable headline, full of keywords and compelling to open. When your future publisher or customer looks down at a list of potential articles – it is the headline and short summary that will catch their eye. Make sure your’s stands our. The more key words that are in the headline and summary – the higher up the search engines it will go.

A well written, well researched article will be sought after, passed around and remembered – which is why your wrote it really I guess!
