I Just Quit My Last Paying Writing Gig…and You Should Too!

I just quit my last paying writing gig. Why? Because I make more money giving my writing away. Yes, that’s right. I make more money giving my writing away than I did selling my articles and columns. In fact I’m making more money writing part-time for free than I did in any of my full-time paid writing jobs and that includes advances and royalties from the publication of three novels. I have been writing professionally for two decades and I never thought I’d make more by writing for free but I am.

But that’s not even the best part — and I know you experienced writers will understand why this is better than money — I can write whatever I want. I pick my topic and my slant. If I want to be funny or irreverent then I can be funny or irreverent. If I want to melancholy or maudlin then I can be melancholy or maudlin. It just doesn’t matter because I’m writing to suit myself! I am my own boss and my own editor — and I’m making money off my writing.

How? I write for the internet. I have been doing so since 1999 and earning money during the entire time. I have written freelance and under contract for a number of internet publications and ventures as well as publishing my own work.

At first I considered my personal internet writing just something to satisfy my creative urge as I transitioned from full-time writing to full-time teaching, but then I noticed something curious — I was making money.

Today, after a lot of work and study I have discovered the right mix that works well for me — and I decided it just doesn’t pay to keep the writing contract any more. The time I used to satisfy the contract can be far more enjoyably and profitably spent writing on the internet.

What internet venues am I using?

~ Ezines and Newsletters

~ Blogs and RSS feeds

~ Web Sites

~ Articles

How do I make money with these efforts?

~ Selling advertising space in my ezines

~ Selling text links on my web sites and blogs

~ Posting pay-per-click ads on my web sites and blogs

~ Promoting affiliate programs on my web sites and blogs as well as in my ezines and newsletters

It really is not a difficult or complicated business model and one any competent writer, or anyone with the ability to string a decent sentence together, could replicate or modify to suit their purpose. I am a writer not a business person, but I know this is working for me and that it could work for you, too.

Now go out there and give your writing away!

Reject Rejection! How Cognitive Therapy Techniques Will Help You Stay Motivated and Succeed

Getting rejected is a normal part of every writer’s life, and it can make it difficult to stay motivated. Fortunately, cognitive therapy offers a lot of useful tools for making sure we don’t let rejection affect us negatively. Here are three distortions that are very common among writers when their work is rejected or they have other setbacks:

Overgeneralization: the tendency to think that one event represents a pattern. Example: Your manuscript comes back, rejected, and you think, “This book is never going to sell!” Or you read an article about how a publisher ripped off a writer, and you assume, “All these publishers are just out to cheat writers.”

Disqualifying the positive: the tendency to ignore or discount positive developments. Example: You get a rejection but it has an encouraging comment on it, and you think, “Who care about positive comments, it still didn’t sell.” Or you sell an article, and you think, “Yeah, but it isn’t for a major publication, so it doesn’t really count.”

Mind reading: the tendency to assume you know what someone else is thinking or their motivation. Example: An editor says your article isn’t right for their magazine, and you think, “He obviously thinks my writing isn’t good enough for this magazine.” (The reality may be that it’s well-written but not the right style or topic for them.) Or you submit a query letter and don’t get an answer, and assume, “They must have hated that idea” (in fact, they may have lost your letter).

ACTION: The first step is to notice when you are thinking in these ways. One good method for clarifying your thinking is to write down what you′re thinking when you feel bad in some way. Then challenge the statements you′ve written down. If you’re thinking something “always” happens—does it, really? If you’re discounting something, ask what is genuinely positive about it. If you’re mind-reading, come up with at least three other things the other person might be thinking.

How Copywriting Freelancers Can Protect Themselves From Being Cheated Without Contracts Or Lawyers

If you are a copywriter and want to make sure you never get cheated or screwed over in any way when doing your deals, then this article will show you how.

Listen: I’m very familiar with people trying to screw me over in business. Reason why is because I’m a copywriter who does deals on pure commission. In other words, I take no up- front fees and, instead, get paid a very large commission on the gross sales. This means a lot more money for me if I win…and nothing if I lose.

It also means I’m especially at risk for being taken advantage of or outright cheated. The following is what I do to protect myself, and you can easily do the same thing — no matter what you sell or who you deal with.

Check this out: In my experience, the whole key to protecting yourself has nothing to do with air-tight agreements or shark-like lawyers.

Reason why is because of simple mathematics. Unless there’s a LOT of money at stake, it’ll almost always cost you money to go after someone in court, even if you recover your money. Something most con artists and cheats are fully aware of when they sign your 28-pound, “iron-clad” contract.

Thankfully, there is one thing God gave you — and every other human being on the planet — that’s free to use and, if used properly, is a thousand times more reliable than any lawyer or contract anyway.

And that is, quite simply, your nervous system — or “gut feeling.”

In fact, I know people who only do “hand shake” deals (no contracts) — even with millions of dollars on the table — and swear by their gut feeling. If something — anything — feels “wrong″ they don’t do the deal. If everything feels “right”, then they do.

No lawyers, contracts or courts necessary.

I know that sounds almost radical, but think about this: Your five senses are constantly relaying information to your subconscious mind — which is constantly sifting and sorting all this information for you “behind the scenes.” Your senses are also picking up invisible signals, feelings and “vibes” from people you deal with (without you even realizing it), and recording them to your subconscious as well.

And so, whenever you are about to do a deal or trust someone, it “cross references” all the information you have on the deal — and all the output and information it has on the person you are dealing with — with all the experiences and knowledge you’ve gained throughout your entire life.

If something is “off” — even if you can’t consciously figure out what it is — your nervous system is instantly activated and you get that “feeling” in your gut that warns you something isn’t right. To ignore this, even with overwhelming “proof” that everything is okay, can be a big mistake.

I used to think this was all a bunch of mumbo jumbo. But it’s not. In my own life, I have been screwed over twice in business and, when I looked back, I saw that both times were when I didn’t trust my gut feeling.

And you want to know something?

If I had my choice of listening to my gut or relying on a 28-pound contract…I′d trust my gut every time.

10 Things that Keep You from Writing Your Book… and What You Can do About It

9 out of 10 professionals and small business owners have at least one book or information product inside their head, but lack the time and organizational skills to get it out into digital or print form.

You may cringe when you read this list of ten things keeping you from writing your book, because it rings too close to home for you. You may have already written a book or an e-book, or have come close to starting it. It’s hard, we know it, and we’ve been there too. But go ahead and read this list, see if you can identify, and let’s discuss a possible solution to the book writing problem.

1. I can’t seem to find the time.

2. Every time I sit down to write I go blank.

3. I need an uninterrupted time period to immerse myself.

4. I need clarity on my message, but there’s no one to consult with.

5. I don’t know where to start or how to organize all the chapters.

6. I’m afraid of losing clients and having my business suffer if I take time away from it to write my book.

7. I agonize over the writing, the grammar, the sentence structure and punctuation.

8. I know what I have to say, just can’t put it into written form without losing clarity and impact.

9. I keep thinking about all the time involved in writing the book, and wonder if it will ever bring me the results I want.

10. Once I get it written, I have no idea how to get it formatted, let alone marketed.

Ok, you know why you haven′t started writing your book. Do you know why you need to write a book?

Why You Need to Publish a Book

Here are a few reasons why writing and publishing a book is important to you as an independent professional, small business owner, or solo-preneur:

1. Having a book, whether in digital, soft-cover, or hard-cover establishes you as an expert in your field.

2. People buy from people they know and trust; reading your book is one step in creating client confidence and relationship.

3. Once people buy and read your book, they will want more of what you have to offer in the way of services and knowledge. Your book can attract readers into your sphere of potential clients once they have bought your book, they are ready to buy other services from you.

4. Having a published book is a great marketing tool, and people will actually pay for your expertise.

5. Books are one of the major sources of passive income for professionals once it is published it can continue to generate sales for you, over the years and while you sleep.

6. If you don’t get a book out soon, your competitors will have the edge, because many of them already have one and even two books out.

7. If you are a speaker, they make great bonus gifts and back-of-the-room sales.

8. They provide a platform for you to expose your readers to your mind and your heart, showing not only what you know, but how much you care. You can reveal your deepest philosophies through your writing, as well as your personal stories.

Three Solutions to the Book-Writing Problem

Of course, there is no problem if you’ve got a lot of money. You just hire a book writer. There are many of them listed at Elance.com. Some professionals do this, especially when they need to get something published fast and there are not a lot of complex issues to put forth. But is this really what you want to do as a professional who has an important message to convey?

Here is a list of solutions:

1. Hire someone to write your book for you (you can always rewrite it in your own voice and add your own stories). When finished, hire a publisher and then a publicist to market it.

2. Hire a writing coach who will walk you through the steps, chapter by chapter (again, for a substantial fee). Then when finished, hire a publisher and a publicist.

3. Bite the bullet, put your business on hold for a few months, and devote your time to just getting it written. You will have to turn it over to a book designer and get it formatted search for the right publisher such as self-publishing or print-on-demand services, and then market it yourself.

Expensive? Yes, all three solutions are expensive. They each have their advantages and disadvantages.

The Fourth Solution

There is another solution! What if there was a way to help you get your book down in print and ready for formatting in 90 days?

What if you could do this by following a system that organized you chapter by chapter, included testimonials, input from peers, professional editing resources, design and formatting resources at low costs, and only took a half-hour of time per day?

Could you afford to invest that much time and energy out of your busy day? Would it be worth it to you even if it meant an hour a day for 90 days?

If you already have a blog that you use to communicate with readers online, you can use your blog to write your book.

The blog format is perfect for organizing your ideas, chapters and getting feedback from readers.

If you don’t have a blog yet, you may wish to create one. They are simple to set up and use (we recommend Typepad.com). It can be used to stay in touch with clients and to write your thoughts in an informal way. A blog is like having a conversation with people interested in your subject or expertise. Once your book is finished and formatted, you can then use your blog to market it. You already have a built in audience, hungry for your content.

Article Marketing Tips for Successful Article Advertising

Writing articles is, by far, the number one way to receive large amounts of traffic on a consistent basis.

Especially if you′re just starting a new website or online business. I am now convinced that, after putting together hundreds of successful advertising packages, articles have tremendous power for attracting visitors that will actually do something while at your site. What I mean by that is when a visitor comes to your site after reading an article they already know you have some knowledge of the topic. Once they land on your site they are more apt to sign up for your newsletter, buy a low cost product, spend more time at your site… which leads to building a relationship and a repeat sales.

Those two things, relationships and repeat sales, should be your main goal. It does no good to sell something to someone and then never see them again. For a long lasting business, you need repeat sales. You need people to continue coming back to your site, time and time again, for their information, news, how-to’s, facts, and any other type of niche content you can give them. Doing this and you’ll see a successful online business continue to grow month after month.

However, to do that you need to get people there. Articles will do that.

Here′s how you can use three simple steps to use articles to successfully advertise your website.

Know Your Stuff

You′re not going to receive any type of traffic if you don’t know what you′re writing about. People want real, relevant, and informative content. They don′t want what you think is funny, cute, or cool.

Writing about what you know will help you build those all important relatioships with the people reading your article. If they think you know what you’re writing about they will want to know more of what you know. For example, I was writing a few articles for a friend of mine on the topic of snowsledding. Now, it just so happens I live in Northern Maine and know a little bit about snowsledding. So, it was an easy fit. However, he lives in Arizona. He couldn’t write about snowsledding if his life depended on it. Those articles are helping him become a major player in selling snowsled parts as an affiliate.

Which leads me to a very important point. If you have a website in a niche you know nothing about… find someone that does and hire them to write for you.

Crank them out one after another

This is where most people fail to see any success from their article advertising. They put out a few articles, submit them to a few article directories, and expect their traffic, and sales, to take off from there. Now, it does begin to take off, but it lands just as quick.

There just isn’t enough power in a few articles to keep a large amount of traffic visiting your site.

So, what do you do?

You keep cranking them out week after week. At least 7 to 10 new articles each week. That sounds like a lot of writing, and it is, but one of the keys to successful advertising is to be in the front of people all the time. To do that you need to write and write and write and write and…

People who blog know all about this. If they up and stop writing new posts… they whither and die. Most successful bloggers crank out two to three new posts a day. By doing this they are cementing their place within that particular niche as someone that can be depended on for great information.

Articles carry the same weight. If you are not noticable on the article directories for a long time, people forget about you.

Keep writing those articles.

Think in terms of one

When you write a letter to someone, or an email, are you thinking that hundreds of thousands of people are going to read it? No. You want to create an environment where the other person reading your letter “feels” what it is you’re writing to them.

The same thing goes for writing articles. Don’t think about the thousands who will read it, just think about one person at a time. Just one person.

Then write from your heart. That person will feel it. And they will act on it. It’s what advertisers in all mediums focus on. When you read a magazine, the ad pulls you in because the person creating it was thinking of you. When you watch a commercial on TV, you don’t go get that sandwich because the person who created that ad had you in mind.

You need to do the same thing. Write for one person in mind. Now that person might be anyone of thousands, but just picture one. Make it between you and that one person.

Remember it’s all about the relationship you can build with that person. Write like that’s the most important thing to you instead of getting that person to visit your site.

Article marketing is the most powerful form of advertising available to online marketers today. Use it right and you′ll see a tremendous amount of traffic visiting your site daily and returning again and again to buy more from you.

Online Article Writer Statistics and the Online Article Submission Website

In doing a little research on online article writers and looking at the empirical data of their average article views per we find some rather fascinating information worthy of note. You see, those authors who completely specialize and write articles for specific purpose, with careful thought to titles, key words and stay fairly specific will indeed increase their article view averages over time.

Those who are the fastest movers will lower (only temporarily) their article averages until they take a breather. Yet, the total over all views will go up. Also I notice that our empirical data and listings were taken at the end of April when I only had 5777 articles to finish the month, as I have 6424 now, actually 6464, but I have to post them later this week. Now then, remember that there are higher traffic months also and your article averages will change somewhat.

I think the total views are more important than the article averages. Yet, I have maintained my steady 265 average throughout because I have increased the number of posts per month as a percentage of the increasing total you see, a little formula I use?

Also realize that eventually if I reach a certain rate of articles per month and remain fixed that the average article views will go up or if I cut down on the average number per month or even stop they will climb quickly also. One also should consider the categories which are most searched on the Internet. These are all considerations to think on when looking at online article stats. Consider this in 2006.

SEO - Bum Marketing and Article Directories

Bum marketing is a way of using articles, either your own or those you have purchased, as platforms into which you will embed affiliate links. The best article sites to submit articles on to use for this purpose are Ezinearticles.com, Goarticles.com and Searchwarp.com, which are all include massive article directory sites and are at the top of the Google search engine rankings.

One of the goals of doing this is to get your affiliate links on Google’s first page. This is done by choosing keywords that are not popular so that you do not attract window shoppers and untargeted traffic. These do not have to be great articles. They just have to be accurate and have the right search engine tools.

These ezine and article directories also prefer submitted articles that are more specialized than usual. For instance an article entitled “How to teach your budgie to talk” would probably have more sales than one entitled “Caring for a budget.” This is because there is too much competition for general words like budgie and care (words that will get you buried deep in the search engine.) So before you submit an article take the time to find that “niche that will make you rich!”

One of the most popular places to submit SEO articles is GoArticles. This site is perfect for a new person to Internet marketing that does not have a website because GoArticles allows you to link directly to the merchant website and make your commission that way.

Yet another lucrative place to submit your SEO material is EzineArticles. This is a very popular and powerful site. EzineArticles will get you listed on the first page of search engines with up to 10,000 (ten thousand) competing results. The drawbacks are you need to write a half decent article as a real person reviews them before they published.

Increasing Web Traffic With Original Articles

The name of the game as far as Internet marketing is concerned is original content. If you are serious about promoting your website, increasing traffic and improving your search engine page ranking then your website must have original articles with relevant content.

Original articles can be beneficial to your web site in two major ways.

1. Keywords. Search engines can only see text. Therefore it is vital that the pages of your website have a lot of text which include keywords associated with your target market or product. As you are probably aware, you cannot simply add keywords in a meaningless format all over your web pages. This will turn customers away as fast as they can click and it is also considered spamming by the search engines and can get your site kicked off the search engines. Articles about subjects relating to your target market are the best way to provide keywords in a relevant meaningful context to your site.

2. Secondly, articles are beneficial to your site because they give customers a reason to return to your site. Getting visitors to return to your site is so much easier than finding new ones. If you web site provides regularly updated unique useful information your Internet visitors are more likely to return on a regular basis.

Uses of Articles

There are a number of ways you can use articles to increase traffic to your web site.

The first thing you should do is set up a blog to be attached to your web site. Your articles can then be posted to your blog and by submitting your blog to the blog search engines and directories you will be marketing your site and creating links throughout the World Wide Web.

In addition to submitting your articles to blogs you can have a section of your website called “articles.” An article can have an entire page dedicated to it targeted to a specific keyword. It is important that you do not use the exact same articles, which you are also submitting to your blog. You can re-word the articles though and then use them. Search engines will know it if you are using the same material in different areas of your web site and this is not an accepted practice.

Finally, a third way you can use articles to promote your web site is to submit articles for press release. Check out www.prweb.com. This is a great site for submitting our press release and it is free.

Original web content in the form of articles will go a long way in promoting your web site for increased traffic and visibility. The key is to regularly update your articles with new and fresh content, which your target market will find interesting. You can write your articles yourself or there are a number of services online, which write original web content for good prices.

How To Write An Article

Why would you want to write articles?

Article writing is the number one way on the net to make extra income
on a tight budget and writing articles can be learned even if you think
you can′t write.

You can market your own website and products or make money from
affiliate and reseller programs. Generally, you need a website for most
affiliate programs to be able to sign up so just build it on any subject so
you have one to give them or just search for those that do not require
your own website.

You then post your articles on your website and / or submit them to
article directories and ezine publishers.

Take this article, for instance, you were probably searching for “article
writing tips” or something similar and you found this article on that
subject.

Write articles on subjects you think people are looking for and add
your affiliate link or your website url at the end of the article in your
signature ad.

Web Site Traffic Generation - Why Article Marketing is My Priority Method

Article marketing has some very powerful features that other marketing tools lack. It is for this reason that I choose article marketing to be my priority method to generate high quality traffic to my website.

When you really think about it, you will find that my choice of using article marketing as a traffic generation tool to be a logic choice. Why? Because article marketing screens all visitors before they enter your website to become prospects. In turn, this will help you to develop a stream of highly targeted traffic to your website.

So, how does article marketing screen my readers?

Well, if you have done everything correctly, the visitor will be attracted to the headline of your article that stimulates the reader to want to read further. At this point, your article will answer or solve the reader’s problem.

If the reader finally clicks on the link leading to your site in the bio area, it more than likely means that he or she was satisfied with your article and somehow feels you have more to offer.

Now let’s think about it;

The first time your readers were screened was when they noticed the headline of your article which ensured the reader that their problems would be answered by reading the article, and so they clicked to read further.

The second time your readers were screened was when they were satisfied that you solved their problems with the article they had just read, and so decided they wanted more from you because they now have faith in your abilities to solve their problems.

Let’s face it; this type of screening can only produce high quality traffic.

If you like to know how to use article marketing to generate high amounts of quality traffic,
